The skull and crossbones represents many things - mortality, secret societies, pirates, but interestingly, "poison" comes last. Back in 1970, the Pittsburgh Poison Control actually replaced the skull and crossbones with the Mr Yuk label because the area children identified this symbol more closely to the Pirates baseball team than to poison. Creepy, funny, or dazzling - the skull and crossbones is a universal term for "bad-ass".
